June brings the Dauphiné Libéré. By this point in the calendar, the Tour de France contenders will be making their final preparations. Despite being a prestigious race in its own right, the Dauphiné Libéré is often used by the pros for this fine-tuning ahead of the Grand Boucle, most famously by Lance Armstrong, who won the event on two occasions.
Held in the mountainous Dauphiné area, the race often sees climbing specialists take victory, especially with a consistently exciting route that regularly ascends the infamous Mont Ventoux.
Nello Lauredi, Luis Ocaña, Charly Mottet and Bernard Hinault all share the record of the most wins, held at three.
